OK, but what do I get out of it?

If you are elected as a Programme Rep, congratulations and welcome to the team!

Training and Support

Programme Reps are trained and supported by NSU’s Representation and Democracy Team. You will receive an in-depth online training experience that you can complete around your studies, ensuring you are clued up on everything you need to know to support your students. They are there to help you fully prepare to take on your role and signpost you to important services that will benefit your peers. If you ever have any questions or concerns, email them at su.reps@northumbria.ac.uk.

Training provides reps with the confidence and understanding to get started in their role, and we have been informed that training:

  • 'Is chance to meet and work with other reps’
  • ‘Provided me with better understanding of the rep role, responsibilities and expectations’
  • ‘Showed me all the other opportunities I could get involved in’
  • ‘Inspired me to make a difference’

Extracurricular Opportunities

Want to take your training further?

We host a number of engaging and informative sessions throughout the year to help develop in your role.

From our R.A.D Workshops to the Rep Conference, there’s plenty to get involved in that will give you additional guidance on how to be the best rep ever.

Transferable Skills

Through working to improve the student experience, Programme Reps develop several key skills that employers have told us they are looking for.

You’ll become a better communicator through working with your staff and students, take a leadership role in representing your peers and become more organised as you prepare for meetings or arrange opportunities for your students.

“Overall, I had a really good time being a representative as it helped me to develop my communication skills and leadership skills.”  – Programme Rep for Business and Management

Role Recognition

All Programme Reps are eligible for our Volunteer Recognition Scheme, which offers a variety of rewards and activities to suit your personal development needs and to help verbalise the skills you have developed as a key volunteer.

You can get an official LinkedIn endorsement and certificate from NSU to showcase to employers, as well as access to exclusive training opportunities.

You can even get your own personal mentor!
