The Legal History Society was founded in 2015 and has developed into a fun and interesting society ever since. We organise a range of events for our members throughout the year including guest speakers, debates, mock trials and movie nights and these all start with our Social shortly after Freshers Week, which will allow new members to meet each other and the committee.
Previous events have included:
'An Introduction To Legal History' with Guest Speakers Clare Sandford-Couch and Jonathan Bainbridge (Legal History Lecturers)
Mock Trial of Guy Fawkes
Movie Nights-E.g.The Crucible, V for Vendetta (Sponsored by Glassworks Student Accomodation http://www.crm-students.com/crm-accommodation/newcastle/glassworks/ )
'Wild & Wicked Women- Witchraft in Newcastle' with Guest Speaker Claire Nally
Debate- Should those affiliated with ISIS be charged with Treason?
As well as providing a fun calendar of events for our members, the society also aims to develop valuable skills such as mooting in mock trials and debating and research skills. Although we are a law-based society we welcome people from all disciplines, including History, Sociology and Criminology.
This year we aim to further develop the society by organising more socials, including a Halloween Bar Crawl. Come as your favourite villain! We also have Peter Judge MBE the former Attorney-General of the Falkland Islands coming in to do a talk about what it's like to be the top Lawyer in one of our furthest territories. We are also planning some trips within the region in order to showcase the North-East's legal history. Our first trip will be to Newcastle's Guildhall where we will have the chance to see the old Assizes.
We welcome anyone who has an interest in, or wants to find out more, about the history of our law in the UK.
