Sabbatical, Student Council and NUS Conference Elections 2020

Our annual leadership elections - these are your chance to stand to lead your Students' Union for the next academic year and choose the students who speak for you. Sabbatical Officers or ‘Sabbs’ are the leaders of NSU. These students are elected to a paid role in which they run your Students' Union for a year. Sabbs will either be graduating this year or take a year out of their studies. They sit on Student Council and the Board of Trustees and are responsible for ensuring strong student leadership of NSU. They are also the lead representatives of Northumbria students and speak to the University, City Council and local and national organisations to make sure the voice of students is heard. Part-time Officers and Equality Officers are elected by students, and play a key role in campaigning for a better University and a fairer experience for all students. These volunteer representatives are members of Student Council and speak up to ensure the voice of the students they represent is heard loud and clear across campus. National Union of Students Conference Delegates represent all Northumbria students at the National Conference of the national union. They make sure the voice of Northumbria students is heard in setting the policy of our national union, and in electing its leadership.

Speak up for students and lead your Students’ Union!

NSU is a democratic, student-led organisation.  Every year we elect the students who lead us, and all registered Northumbria students are eligible to stand for one of our leadership roles and to vote in the elections.

Our elected opportunities provide students with a chance to make a difference to their Union and University, and to stand up for students at Northumbria.  They also give incredible leadership experience and skills to boost your future career.

These pages contain information on our elections process and we hope they are helpful to you.  We’d also love to hear from you if you might be interested in leading the Students’ Union.

These are amazing opportunities and you can always come to see us about them in the Students’ Union on any Northumbria campus, by emailing any questions to or come to one of the Lead Your Union information sessions.

Nominations for Sabbatical, Student Executive and NUS Conference open on 9th December. Nominations close Friday 7th February 2019, 12pm.

You can only run for one position, except for NUS delegate where you can run for that and another position. If you nominate yourself for more than one sabbatical or student council position, you will not be allowed to run until you decide.
