In light of our super exciting and spooky Halloween bash I would like to make a short statement.
When attending events at NSU in fancy dress please be mindful of the appropriateness of the costume. This is not the fun police, this is not political correctness gone too far, this is being respectful of fellow students especially those who are of a marginalised group in society.
Students have campaigned with great success to stop the sale of offensive Halloween costumes which can be triggering for those affected, but also sets back the hard work done by liberation movements over the years.
NSU's Equality & Diversity policy is clear in dictating that behaviours found to be homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist or offensive to those with disabilities will not be tolerated. Therefore wearing a costume that contributes to any of the mentioned behaviours will not be permitted, nor will costumes mocking a students faith or belief.
If you are in doubt, don't wear it; there are a million entertaining costumes to pick from. Your desire to be 'funny' or 'edgy' is not greater than every students' right to feel like NSU is a safe space.
I hope to see lots you at our Project X party!
